A city-based detective agency has been asked to refund Rs 21,000 to a Dadumajra resident who had hired it for spying on his son-in-law.

Gurcharan Singh had moved the district consumer disputes redressal forum against the Sector 46-based detective services, saying that though it was he who had hired the agency to gather evidence in connection with a matrimonial dispute between his son-in-law and daughter, the detective agency had connived with his son-in-law and given an "incorrect report" to him.

Gurcharan said he had wanted to present the detectives' report before the court, but was not satisfied with it and realised that the entire exercise had been a waste of time and money. Its its reply, the detective services denied all the allegations and said that Gurcharan Singh wanted them to file a manipulated report to be used in court against his son-in-law under the Domestic Violence Act.

Unimpressed by the agency's defence, the forum, in its order dated November 27, held: "The contention of the detective agency that the complainant wanted a manipulated report is not substantiated with any relevant document. So, we can definitely conclude that the report of the detective agency is not adequate and the grievance of the complainant is genuine."
