Union food and consumer affairs minister KV Thomas on Tuesday assured Punjab food and civil supplies minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon that the Centre would announce relaxations in the specifications of paddy procurement by Thursday.
Kairon, who met the union minister in Delhi, had sought personal intervention of Thomas to announce certain exemptions in the wake of the hiccups in the ongoing procurement of the crop in the state's grain markets.
The central teams had visited the mandis of Punjab last week to assess the damage caused to paddy in terms of discoloration and moisture content due to inclement weather lashed by unseasonal and unprecedented rains and hailstorm in September and, thus, collected samples to further examine and subsequently recommend the relaxations required.
Kairon impressed upon Thomas to quickly announce the relaxation in specifications to enable the government agencies promptly procure the crop arrivals in a hassle-free manner.
In a statement here later, Kairon reiterated that every single grain of the farmers would be lifted in the ongoing procurement operations and all farmers would be made payments within 48 hours.
