Extensive security arrangements have been put in the Panjab University (PU) campus for the student council elections scheduled to be held, here on Wednesday.
Panjab University and its affiliated colleges across the city have been turned into a high security zone with more than 900 cops deployed by the Chandigarh police for the purpose of conducting peaceful elections.
The deputy superintendent of police (central) Ashish Kapoor said, "As many as 350 Chandigarh police cops have been deployed at the Panjab University campus and 150 at University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) Sector 25. Besides, there is also mounted police at the campus. For the affiliated colleges, 70 cops each have been posted to maintain security during the polls."
Around 100 women cops have also been deployed at the campus and colleges. The DSP added that overall, more than 900 cops have been deployed all over the city, including, the entry and exit points of the city to ensure peaceful elections. The police also carried out checks at hostels and paying guest accommodations to check the presence of weapons. During raids, about 50 baseball bats and other sharp edged weapons were recovered in the one week. The vehicles entering the university campus are also being checked.
Vajra, a riot controlling vehicle along with water cannons to combat any untoward situation has also been stationed by the police.
Senior police officers held a meeting with the party presidents and warned them to stay away from violence and coordinate in conducting peacefull elections.
