Wednesday's incident of gangrape of 19-year-old BA-LLB student of only women-university Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya has raised suspicion that something is amiss in the institute. Five university girls had committed suicide in the past four months.
Hindustan Times caught up with university vice chancellor Pankaj Mittal to know views on the incident.
Girl students have alleged that incidents of eve teasing and molestation are common on the university campus, but you have never taken action.
In my three years at the helm, I have not received a single complaint in this regard.
Is it so that university authorities are pressurising the rape victim and her family to change her statement?
There is not an iota of truth in this. The university took prompt action by calling up the police to register a case.
Despite a ban on main suspect Amit Malik's entry to the campus, he continues to visit the university and threaten girls, who are fighting for justice. Why is it so?
I am surprised how he gained entry to the university despite me banning him after he was found in an inebriated condition a few month ago. This shows the complicity of university staff with Malik and it is a matter of concern.
Students have alleged that your driver misbehaved with them on the campus a few days back.
I am not aware of this incident.
Why did university girls commit suicides in the past four months?
One of the girls committed suicide due to depression, while two others ended life because of their personal problems.
What steps the university has taken against a few male professors charged with sexually assaulting girl students?
The university has suspended the professor concerned and an inquiry is still pending against him.
What measures are university authorities taking to end the protest by girls?
To address their grouses, the university will constitute a committee that will have students' representatives, officials of district administration and university officials as its members.
There are allegations that you are not available on the campus most of the time.
I have a family to tend to. And on weekends, I visit my home in New Delhi.
There are several shortcomings in the university, including bad quality of food at mess, no CCTV camera on the campus, ineligible security staff and rude behaviour of wardens.
The food served at the mess is of good quality. As regards to other things, the arrangements will be made as early as possible.
