Rajender Pal Upadhyaya will take charge as the new inspector general of Chandigarh police on Wednesday.

A welcome parade for the 1991-batch IPS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre will be held at the Sector-26 police line.

The post fell vacant on the retirement of PK Shrivastva on November 30, 2012, who served as Chandigarh IGP for two years.

Upadhyaya's last posting was as additional director in enforcement directorate (ED), New Delhi. He bagged the President's medal for showing gallantry in 2006 while handling a large violent mob in Daman in 2003 and thus helping save many precious lives and property.

He also participated in security arrangements at various high-profile international and national conferences etc.

At present, DIG Alok Kumar holds the charge of IGP.
