More than half of the people in Punjab's Ludhiana, SAS Nagar, Amritsar and Jalandhar districts live in urban areas, Census data released on Thursday said. Punjab director (census) Seema Jain said Ludhiana was the most urbanised district of Punjab and accounted for 20% of the total urban population of the state. "Every fifth urban dweller in Punjab resides in Ludhiana district," she said.
SAS Nagar is the second-most urbanised district in the state, leaving behind Amritsar and Jalandhar at third and fourth spots, respectively.
Even the least urbanised Punjab district is more urbanised than the overall urbanisation level of Bihar and Himachal Pradesh, Jain said. In Punjab, 62.5% people live in rural areas, while 37.5% live in urban areas. Between 2001 and 2011, urban population in Punjab increased by 25.72%, the official said.
