The UT cyber cell, in a move to create awareness among city teenagers on use and misuse of the Internet, will start an awareness campaign from today.
In this campaign, the UT cyber-cell officials will visit schools and educate students on the use of cyber space, including social networking websites, which are widely used by the students.
The cyber-cell officers informed that the motive behind starting such an awareness drive was the rise in cybercrime complaints with them. Mostly, teenagers were involved in these cases, they added.
Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Rajesh Kalia, who is heading the UT cyber-cell in the city, said, "The social media is mostly being used by youngsters. Looking at the cases with us, we realise that it's the teenagers who are generally misusing the same. Lack of awareness is a major issue and these teenagers don't know where to draw a line."Kalia said adding that focus would be on sharing the laws on misuse of cyber space.
The first such session will be held in St Stephen's School, Sector 45, where the officials will hold a one-hour session for students above 13 years.
The officials added that though the official age to use such social networking websites was 18 years and above, but not many had followed the rule.
The officials said while they couldn't stop students to use the cyber space, they could educate them on its usage.
