The Chandigarh transport department has revised the tax structure for various categories of transport and non-transport vehicles.

The move has been taken to bring the tax structure on a similar pattern and tax bracket with the neighbouring Punjab and Haryana. Taxes on the said categories of vehicles had not been revised for many years, and thus were not at par with Punjab and Haryana, leading to a huge tax differential across the states pertaining to the registration and transfer of vehicles.

Further, it had come to the notice of the department that the comparatively low tax structure in Chandigarh had also spurred the tendency of registration of vehicles in the UT against false addresses, which needed to be checked.

As regards the transport vehicles, the tax structure for new registration of taxies, three-wheelers, ambulances, buses and light/medium/heavy goods vehicles have been revised.

Some of these categories of transport vehicles along with certain specified non-transport vehicles have now been made into a one-time road tax.

As regards the non-transport vehicles, the tax for the transfer of vehicles from other states and fee for the transfer of ownership of vehicles within Chandigarh have been revised. As per the notification, the tax for transfer of vehicles from other states will now depend on the insured declared value (IDV) of the Vehicle.
