Cash and jewellery worth over Rs 50 lakh were stolen from the Sector-8 house of a reputed city jeweller here on Sunday night.
Sources in the police said the thieves decamped with Rs 5 lakh in cash, diamond jewellery, whose value was yet to be ascertained, and a silver dinner set worth Rs 30 lakh.
Giving details, sources in the police said the theft took place at the house of the owner of Nikka Mal Babu Ram jewellers Kamalkant Jain. The police have detained a former domestic help and two others for questioning on suspicion.
Sources said that a window of the house was found broken and the latch was missing. Sources said that the role of an insider in the theft couldn’t be ruled out.
It all happened on Sunday night, when Kamalkant Jain and his family were sleeping on the ground floor of their house. The thieves broke open the window of an unoccupied room on the same floor. The thieves had cut the glass of the window to enter the room, where an almirah was kept. The Jain family found the room ransacked on Monday morning.
Jain told the police that the lock of the almirah had been found broken and the locker missing. The locker contained Rs 5 lakh cash, diamond jewellery, whose value was yet to be ascertained and a silver dinner set worth Rs 30 lakh.
Kamalkant Jain said it was a well planned theft. “It appears that the thieves were well versed with the house and knew where the valuables were lying. The thieves chose the room where the valuables were lying,” Jain said. Following the theft the police rounded up three people — Arjun, Sanjay and Anil Kumar.
Arjun had been removed from the job of domestic help a few months ago by one of the Jain brothers, while Anil and Ajay are still employed with the family.
Kamalkant had relieved Arjun from his service as he had allegedly stolen Rs 50,000 from his house. But Kamalkant didn’t lodge a complaint with the police.
He said that he had spotted Arjun near the house more than once after he had been removed from work.
