Verka official, 7 others held for gambling in P'kula

The police on Thursday arrested a Verka milk plant official and seven others for gambling on Wednesday night from Western Court hotel in Sector 10 here.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Panchkula, Rahul Sharma, ordered the raid after he received information in this regard.

Inspector Suresh Kumar, who is Crime Investigation Agency-2 in-charge, led the police party and raided room number 208 in Western Court at about 8:30 pm.

The accused have been identified as Verka official Sunil Kumar, Rajiv Kumar, Arun Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Ashwani Kumar, Kamlesh Bhatia, Rohit Kumar and Deepak Kumar were arrested.

As per the first information report (FIR) registered at Sector 5 police station, the hotel management was allegedly facilitating gambling.

“We are investigating the matter. The room was booked in the name of Ashwani Kumar who was also arrested,” said inspector Suresh Kumar.

The police said the accused were found gambling with playing cards.

“About `2.99 lakh has been recovered from the accused . One of the accused has claimed that he works as a manager with Verka,” said deputy commissioner of police Rahul Sharma.
