A body, along with a Mahindra Pickup vehicle, was recovered from the Bhakra canal near Behrampur Zimidara village, about 6km from Rupnagar, on Monday evening.

According to police, Mahindra Pickup (PB 65Z-9260) was noticed near the bridge over the Bhakra canal on the Rupnagar-Morinda road by some divers searching for coins with the help of magnates in the canal.

After the magnate of one of divers touched the vehicle, they informed the SinghBhagwantpura police about the matter. Later, the vehicle was taken out of the canal with the help of a crane and divers. A body was also recovered from the vehicle.

Upon identification, the deceased was identified as Surjit Singh, 45, of Saidpur, falling under the Dera Bassi police station of SAS Nagar.

After the investigation, it was found that Surjit Singh was missing since March 30. His family had searched for him at various places, and finally, a case under section 365 (kidnapping or abducting with an intent to secretly and wrongfully confine a person) of Indian Penal Code was registered at the Dera Bassi police station on April 5. Meanwhile, it is not known yet as to how the vehicle fell into the canal.

Dera Bassi station house officer (SHO) Tarlochan Singh said it seemed to be a mishap. However, police have been probing the case.
