In an incident reflecting on the increasing lawlessness in the city, more than six assailants fired four shots at a MA (History) student near gate number 3 on Panjab University campus, on Friday afternoon.
The target, Surjeet, a hosteller, escaped unhurt, while his friend Bakshish Singh received minor injuries.
An empty shell has also been recovered from the spot. Surjeet has named a Sector-40 resident Karan as the leader of the group, in his complaint to the police.
“The accused Karan suspected me of having an affair with his sister, even though we were just good friends. He had been threatening me for the past four days,” he claimed.
The slippers o f the main accused have been recovered from the spot. What is alar ming is that the university security guards did not react to the incident, even though they were stationed a mere 10 metre from the attack site. The registration number of the two vehicles was also not noted down. Surjeet, a native of Fazilka, added: “The attackers did not give time to us to react and did not even listen to me. I was also pushed and kicked before Karan took out the pistol and fired at me.”
Police have registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code at the Sector-11 police station.
