Virtual polling continues in HP; 18,000 postal ballots register

Virtual polling to elect unicameral 12th HP Legislative Assembly is continuing as Election Commission of India allowed 1.16 lakh Postal electors to cast their vote upto 8 am of December 20, when counting would begin to decide the fate of 459 candidates.

The actual polling was conducted on November 4 in all 68 assembly constituencies in one go and 73.92 per cent turnout was registered.

According to chief electoral officer Narendra Singh Chauhan, polling through the postal ballet is on in the state which would add to the actual turnout just before counting begins on December 20 at 8 am.

He said as many as 1.16 lakh electorate are expected to exercise their right to franchise including 74,000 jawans of armed forces, paramilitary forces and state people employed outside Himachal, 42,000 employees, including police and home guard forces jawan who were deployed for state elections duty.

The polling through postal ballet kicked off on November 3, a day before actual voting.

However, EC received complaints against some candidates and parties that efforts are being made to influence the postal ballot voters. All the returning officers are directed to act immediately in case of any such complaint.

Some of the candidates have also complained that several people on duty have not received the postal ballots.

All the loaded EVMs sealed inside 39 strong rooms created in the state were being guarded by the commandoes of paramilitary forces.

Chauhan said 46,08,359 electorate, including 22,31,772 women, were eligible in the state to cast their vote.
