The trend of online shopping has existed in the western markets for decades, but it is now growing exponentially in the Indian market, which was considered conservative until now. Online shopping is also proving to be a boon for the country’s retail market, especially with a wide variety of products available here at unheard-of discounts.
For those who are still new to the medium, we get four avid online shoppers from the region to share their experiences and help you make smart choices.
Sukhdev Singh, 23, Amritsar-based entrepreneur
Floored by: The fact that online shopping is just like another shopping mall, but with no parking hassles. Also, there are some products that I can’t find in Amritsar, so online sites come in handy then. Till date, I have spent almost R50,000-R70,000 online.
Essential online buy: Little Bee honey, which isn’t available anywhere in the city. I also like to shop for electronics and goods.
Best purchase: I bought an HTC phone from tradus.in, almost four months ago. Even now, there is no store that is offering this phone at the same price.
Regret purchase: I always call up to confirm about a product’s features, so no regrets until now.
Favourite websites: homeshop.18, sulekha.com
Saayana Singh, 25, Chandigarh-based senior content writer with an IT firm
Floored by: Most importantly, it saves time. Be it day or night, a customer’s convenience is paramount when it comes to shopping online. Then there are huge tempting discounts that lure me at least five times in a month. However, if asked to choose, there is quite nothing like shopping at a real store where one can touch the garment and try it.
Essential online buy: I buy shoes, jewellery, scarves, brooches, clothes, perfumes and cosmetics and also bag restaurant deals when offered.
Best purchase: A pair of boots that I bought last year for just R1,000 from snapdeal.com.
Regret purchase: A pair of earrings that I bought from snapdeal.com were actually much bigger than what they looked like online.
Favourite websites: snapdeal.com and fashionandyou.com
Prince Sharma, 20, student at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar
Floored by: There is a much greater choice available online than at traditional stores. At the click of a mouse, one can browse through numerous sites and get to compare products with complete details.
Essential online buy: Accessories such as watches, gadgets and home furniture.
Best purchase: A Tommy Hilfiger watch from watchkart.com, which I got at a discount of 25% and ended up paying just R8,000 for it.
Regret purchase: Some t-shirts that I bought some years ago didn’t turn out to be what was shown on the site.
Favourite websites: fabfurnish.com, flipkart.com, watchkart.com
Sachin Ruparai, 31, Chandigarh-based project manager
Floored by: There are great discounts available online and then there is free home delivery! Credit card companies also offer great deals on transactions made online. Last year alone, I shopped worth R50,000 online.
Essential online buy: Clothes, electronics and books.
Best purchase: On fashionandyou.com, there was a 40% discount on home products and an additional 20% off if payment made through American Express credit card. That was my best purchase.
Regret purchase: Some cheap plastics that I bought at a clearance sale.
Favourite websites: landmarkonthenet.com and Myntra.com
