Even as the entire country is on the boil over the horrific gangrape and subsequent death of the Delhi gangrape victim and the police are dolling out assurance of making the tricity safer, instances of crime against women across the city show no sign of decline as is indicated by seven cases of crime that have been lodged in the past 24 hours.

The assurances came during a programme "Women with broken wings" which was organised by the police and the administration on Thursday for bringing to fore the safety measures related to them. However, the registration of cases brought to fore how unsafe women were in the city.

In an inhumane incident, a domestic help from West Bengal accused a Sector-41 based couple of attempt to rape and sexual assault.

Later, the couple - Naresh and Seema - were arrested in the evening.

The 20-year-old girl, lying on a stretcher in the Sector-16 general hospital emergency, told the police that the couple allegedly stripped her naked and made a video clip of it before sexually assaulting her.

The matter was brought to the notice of the police on Thursday morning after the girl made an attempt to escape from the house where she was working as domestic help in Sector 41.

The SHO of the Sector-39 police station, Charanjit Singh, claimed that she tried to descend from the balcony of the house with the help of a sheet, after moving out of the room on the pretext of going to a washroom.

However, the victim in an attempt to escape fell down on the first floor and sustained injuries. The neighbours informed the police after they saw the injured girl.

A visit to the spot revealed that the victim even left behind her slippers while making an escape.

The SHO said the girl told the police that she was hit on the forehead with a glass bottle and a badminton racket was inserted inside her.

Talking to the Hindustan Times, the victim said her father brought her to New Delhi from West Bengal from where she was handed over to Seema. Seema brought her to the city on Wednesday at 10.30pm.

The victim alleged that the couple wanted her to go to a hotel and indulge in "immoral activities".

After she refused to go, the couple allegedly removed her clothes and thrashed her. They also made a video of it. They even hit her on the forehead with a bottle. The SHO added that the victim received injuries on her back, shoulder and forehead. The duo also snatched the victim's mobile.

The victim added that she along with two other girls was staying in the house.

The police said as of now it was not clear whether the victim's case was isolated or part of a bigger racket. Inquiries were made by the police from at least two other women who reportedly accompanied the victim to Chandigarh from New Delhi.

The police have booked Naresh and Seema for attempt to rape after the medical examination of the victim confirmed that she was sexually assaulted.

A team of doctors carried out a detailed medical checkup of the girl in the Sector-16 general hospital. Later in the evening, the police took Naresh and Seema for medical examination in the Sector-16 general hospital.

The SHO said Naresh, 36, and Seema, 35, have been staying together for the past one year. Seema claimed that her husband had died a few years ago. Seema hails from West Bengal and Naresh is from Meerut.

The police are also suspecting their involvement in supplying of girls for flesh trade. The duo has been booked for robbery, outraging the modesty of a woman, criminal conspiracy (120-B), unnatural offence and making an obscene video clip under Section 66-A of the IT Act.

The police have also approached the UT social welfare department for taking care of the victim as she had no relative in the city.

Sources in the general hospital said the girl told doctors that her employees inserted fingers and badminton racket into her private parts. The victim alleged that the sexual assault was done by the woman, while the man made an attempt to rape.

The doctors said the rape would be confirmed only after results of the vaginal swab. Initially, the doctors had problem in understanding the victim's version as she hailed from West Bengal and only speaks Bengali.

However, a doctor, who knew Bengali, joined the medical team, following which the victim stated everything to her.
