With the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) polls set for voting on Friday, liquor distribution is at a high to woo students, boys as well as girls.

Almost all party leaders confirm that booze is being distributed and arrangements for this were in fact started more than a fortnight ago and the planning could put an MBA to shame.

Leaders confirm that there was an equal demand for liquor from both boys as well as girl students.

In fact, liquor bottles have been made confiscated from boys at varsity gates, but the authorities are unwilling to say if any liquor bottles or consignment have been confiscated from girl hostels.

However, there has been intense checking at the girl hostels for the past four days, lending credence to the theory that when it comes to drinking, girls are matching boys.

Atipriya, a MA first-year psychology student, told HT, “There are talks that liquor is being offered by parties in return of votes. For the past four days, the authorities have been checking our rooms several times a day. We have been warned that no liquor must be found be in our rooms or there would be hell to pay.”

Avneet, a first-year student at the department of laws said, “Liquor is definitely being distributed and I have heard students discuss the issue in the hostel. The authorities are strict and even the seniors have been asked to keep a check.”

A senior party leader said, “The system of distributing liquor is organised and the bottles were got inside the PU a fortnight ago. Alcohol is also provided to students at all fresher parties arranged by different student bodies. Interestingly, even girls do not hesitate nowadays in listing out their preference for brands and alcohol.”

Student leaders add girls consume liquor when they are on an official night-out are at a friend’s place. Party organisers and leaders are even tipped on the choice of liquor before-hand.

Leaders claim that most parties are offering Blenders Pride at most parties, but the brand is made more upscale depending upon the number of votes at stake.

Chief security officer Jatinder Grover said, “We have confiscated some beer bottles at the gates. If somebody is found drunk at the hostels, we cannot do much about it as they legally can take liquor. Action can be only initiated if we catch somebody drinking inside hostels.”

Leaders claim that for boys, the common brand circulated is Blenders Pride, Teachers and even 100 Pipers is being offered. Among girls, the demand for Absolut Vodka is on a rise, with hard liquor increasingly being asked for.
