The accused have been identified as Sanjog Kumar, Sonu Dhane and Sanju. The deputy superintendent of police Crime Jagbir Singh said the trio were unemployed, and had taken to vehicle lifting to make quick buck.
He added the accused were arrested as part of a special drive. There has been a surge in vehicle theft activities in the recent years and mostly, two wheelers have been targeted by thieves.
Sources said police received the information about a vehicle lifter using stolen vehicle with fake number plate on February 8. After which, a trap was laid near the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Sanjog Kumar was arrested with the stolen vehicle.
Police said the accused admitted to the offence and disclosed he had been involved in vehicle lifting for past couple of years. On his disclosure, police also came to know about his two accomplices, Sonu Dhane and Sanju, who are lodged in Burail Jail for auto theft.
Meanwhile, the crime branch officials have obtained a production warrant against Sonu and Sanju. It has been learnt that the trio had lifted around 13 traffic vehicles, of which, eight motorcycles and three scooters have been recovered from their possession.
MODUS OPERANDI
They used to lift vehicles from different areas and sell them as junk. The trio told police that they got into vehicle lifting to make quick money and live life a luxurious life. Cops are expecting more recoveries of vehicles from the three.
