A 30-year-old married woman, Neetu Puri ended her life at her house in Handesra by hanging herself from the ceiling fan on Tuesday.

Her body was found hanging in her room with a dupatta.

Alleging dowry death, the deceased's parents and relatives blocked the Ambala-Chandigarh highway for nearly an hour on Wednesday.

The protesters were demanding immediate arrest of the accused. However, the Handesra police have booked Neetu's husband Ashwani Kumar and father-in-law Mani Ram Gosain, a retired Army subedar, on the charge of abetment to suicide.

The victim's parents and kin gathered at the Dera Bassi civil hospital for post-mortem and later blocked highway around 11.30am.

They raised slogans against the police for allegedly not arresting the accused.

The protesters agreed to lift the dharna after Dera Bassi SHO Gurdial Singh assured them that the accused would be arrested.

Meanwhile, commuters remained stranded on both sides of the highway and had to face a lot of inconvenience.

Neetu, only daughter of Bheem Singh Puri, a resident of Maloya, Sector 39, Chandigarh, got married to Ashwani in September 2000. She had two sons.

In his complaint, Neetu's brother Devinder Singh alleged that Neetu's in-laws used to harass her, seeking more dowry.

On Monday, his sister informed him on phone that she was being assaulted by her husband and father-in-law and she would end her life. He persuaded her not to take such extreme step. On Tuesday, Ashwani informed him at 3pm that Neetu had ended her life.

Handesra SHO Shinder Pal said the police have registered a case under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC against the husband and the father-in-law.

Ashwani has been arrested, while Mani Ram is still at large, he added.
