On Friday evening, when Saini was staying alone at her home, she was found dead in her bathroom.

Her servant, who was hired about six days back, decamped with jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh along with Rs 30, 000 cash by breaking open the locks of the cupboards.

Police sources said they suspected Saif to behind the death and that teams had been sent to Bihar to nab him.

Police received information about the murder at around 7pm on Friday evening. They reached the spot and rushed Saini to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Police said Saini had spoken to her daughter Shefali at about 3:15 pm. Shefali had then made calls to her mother at about 6:15 pm, but there was no response.

After making about 15 calls, Shefali called up her mother’s neighbours.

The neighbours visited Saini’s house and informed Shefali that her mother and the servant were not at home and the entire house had been ransacked.

The police was then informed. Police officials found Saini’s body in the bathroom adjoining her room.

Sources said nearly 10 boys were staying on the first and second floor of Saini’s house as paying guests. Police said the postmortem would be conducted on Sunday.

A case of murder under section 302 and theft of property in possession of master by clerk or servant under section 381 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and investigations into the case have been initiated.

Servant hired from Delhi-based agency

Saini hired Saif six days ago through a Delhi-based agency. Saif (22) was trained in cooking and other household chores.

Shefali, who is a college professor and a resident of Rewari, said: “I contacted the agency and asked them to send the servant so that my mother gets complete help. The agency charged Rs 30,000 and the servant’s salary was fixed at Rs 6,000 per month. I thought my mother was in safe hands as recruitment agencies conduct a complete verification and disclose the address of the servants. He is from Madhubani in Bihar.”

Shefali said her mother had told her that Saif always insisted on sleeping inside the house; however Saini made him sleep in the outer verandah of the house, which was sheltered. She said Saif also used to go out to an unknown place every day for an hour. Shefali said her own servant had been recruited through the same agency.

More than one suspect?

Police said the incident might have occurred when Saini went to take a nap in her room between 3:30pm and 6:00pm. Police said Saif was washing the car at the entrance of the house when the murder took place.

Police further said from the backyard, at least two people had entered the house and reached Saini’s room.

Police officials have found signs of struggle as strands of Saini’s hair were found on the room’s floor. Police said she was dragged to the bathroom and her hands were tied with a cloth and the feet with a tape. Police officials have found bruises on her neck and face. One of her earrings was removed while the other one was still present. Her bangles were also removed. The accused escaped by scaling the wall using buckets; the police have found footprints on the wall.
