A 28-year-old woman, Lalita Rani, hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her Sector-23 house on Wednesday, police said.
The police got a call from her friend, Nitin, in Kolkata that Rani was not picking her phone and he feared that something was wrong. He claimed that earlier, while talking over phone Rani had told him that she would die. Fearing worse, Nitin called up the police. After receiving the call, the police rushed to Rani's house and informed her parents, who found Rani hanging. Her parents had gone to their another house at Manimajra in the morning.
Police sources said Rani had gone through a disturbed marriage and had got divorced about two years back. She was to get re-married in September.
Sources said the police found beer bottles and cigarettes from Rani's room, indicating that she had consumed liquor before ending her life. Rani was working in a private firm in Kolkata and had come home on leave.
The police have questioned a taxi driver who had brought Rani from Kaimbwala, where she had purchased beer on Tuesday night.
Suicide note recovered
In a suicide note, Rani stated that her gold and two plots should be handed over to her mother and elder sister. She blamed her ex-husband for forcing her taking the extreme step. Rani's sister had shifted from Chandigarh to Jalandhar about a few days back.
Police sources said inquest proceedings have been initiated into the matter and the body was sent for post mortem.
High drama prevailed as mediapersons descended at the victim's house. Rani's father shouted at mediapersons and refused to talk to them.
