A 24-year-old woman from Patiala, Puneeta Kapoor, was found hanging at her paying guest accommodation in Sector 16 on Saturday night. Though the police suspect suicide, her family believes it could be murder. Her brother has even named a man who was allegedly pressuring her to marry him. The body was kept at the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, and would be handed over to the family after post-mortem examination. No suicide note was found.

Sham Lal, grandfather of the victim, said her phone was missing and there were injury marks around her neck and face. He told the police that Puneeta had last spoken to her younger brother on Saturday morning. Daughter of a railways employee, Puneeta had recently joined a private firm in SAS Nagar, her brother Amit Kapoor said.

Amit told HT that Puneet was being harassed by a man named Dapinder Singh, resident of Sector 16, who was putting pressure on her to marry him. Amit said Puneet had told him on Saturday morning that she was assaulted by Dapinder on Friday night.

Sector-17 police station house officer (SHO) inspector Dilsher Singh Chandel, however, said it appeared to be a case of suicide: "Investigations are on."
