Police on Thursday arrested a married woman for allegedly implicating a man in a false rape case and asking him to pay Rs 15 lakh for the charges to be withdrawn.
The crime branch of the police said the woman, a resident of Sector 25, was booked on charges of putting person in fear of accusation of offence, in order to commit extortion.
The woman had accused Pranvir Saini of raping her and filed a case against him at Chandimandir police station on May 22.
Sources in the crime branch, however, said neither technical nor circumstantial evidence suggested rape and that investigators had found the allegations “baseless, false and devoid of truth”.
A telephonic conversation in which the accused demands money from Saini to withdraw the alleged false case is in possession of the police, the sources added.
Sources said the accused, along with her husband, had also extorted Rs 15 lakh from another man, Pawandeep, a resident of Yamunanagar, in February by levelling false rape charges against him.
The woman’s arrest comes days after Panchkula police asked the Haryana police chief to suspend assistant commissioner of police Desh Bandhu for trying to extort money from Saini and promising to prove him innocent.
Saini had filed a complaint accusing Desh Bandhu of pressing him to pay a bribe of Rs 40 lakh to drop the charges levelled by the woman.
Desh Bandhu moved Punjab and Haryana high court demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the case.
