A woman has been sentenced to a year in jail by a court here for wrongly alleging that her 83-year-old mother had "illicit relations" with the latter's cousin. The convicted woman allegedly did it to pressure the mother to will her property in her name.
In what is being seem as the first case of its kind in recent times here, Iqbal Kaur, 83, resident of Sector 9, Chandigarh, had moved court in 2006 stating that, after the death of her husband in May 1997, her daughter Rabinder Sidhu and her husband had moved into a portion of the family house. Exercising "undue influence and pressuring", Rabinder allegedly got Iqbal Kaur to register a will bequeathing her entire share of property in favour of Rabinder alone. Iqbal alleged that thereafter Rabinder started harassing her, so she revoked her will. This irked Rabinder, who then alleged illicit relations between her mother and mama (mother's first cousin).
Rabinder, in her statement before the court, pleaded false implication.
Additional chief judicial magistrate KK Jain on November 6 awarded one-year jail term to Rabinder for defaming her mother. She was granted bail soon after.
Turning down the plea of leniency, the court said, "The accused has no remorse with regard to her conduct of leveling defamatory allegations against her own mother, and throughout the trial she stood with the assertions made by her."
