Woman set ablaze ‘for dowry’

A woman was allegedly set afire by her in-laws at Burail on Friday after she failed to meet their demands for dowry.

The victim’s father, Tejpal Singh, who hails from Kurukshetra, said his daughter Tony Rani was married to Amandeep in June this year. He said ever since the marriage his daughter’s in-laws had been harassing her for dowry. They demanded a car and Rs 10 lakh which he was unable to pay, Tejpal claimed.

In his complaint, Tejpal told the police that his daughter called him on September 18 night telling him that her in-laws were planning to pour kerosene over her set her afire. Tejpal along with his relatives left Kurkshetra.

When he was on his way on September 19, a relative called him and informed that Tony was set afire by her in-laws and she was admitted to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research.

Tejpal reached the city and lodged a complaint against Tony’s husband Amandeep, father-in-law Ishwar and mother-in-law Kanta for trying to kill his daughter for not meeting their demand for dowry.

A case under section 307 (attempt to murder), 498-A and 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector-34 police station. Further investigations into the case are on.
