Gurpreet Kaur of Nikke Ghumman village in Gurdaspur district, who had tried to immolate herself in front of the residence of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal in Chandigarh on December 12, 2014, succumbed to her burns on Saturday at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16, Chandigarh, where she had been admitted with 40% burns.

The girl, an orphan, lived at Harmandar Sahib in Amritsar. She had passed Class 12 and had a diploma in computer applications. She was looking for a government job.

She took the extreme step after her failure to secure a job despite several attempts. She had even approached Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Avtar Singh Makkar, several Punjab ministers and SAD leaders, but to no avail.

Badal had expressed sympathy with the girl after she tried to immolate self, saying the government followed certain norms while employing someone. The CM, however, had announced free treatment for the victim.
