A day after Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal launched mobile women commando squads to curb crimes against women, the women cops' first stop was classrooms of schools in SAS Nagar. The women commandos interacted with girl students, asking them not to shy away from bringing incidents of eve teasing or sexual harassment to their notice and also gave them tips on how to handle difficult situations.

The 20 women commandos, who have been deputed in SAS Nagar, went to various government schools in SAS Nagar to encourage girl students to come forward and lodge their complaints. They also told the students to inform their teachers and parents as and when they face harassment. The commandos urged the girls to lodge their complaints against the offences like eve teasing, molestation, stalking etc. at toll-free helpline number 1091 and assured them of quick response on police's part.

The commandos will be deployed outside women colleges, schools, co-ed colleges, girls hostels, working women hostels, busy markets, malls, cinemas and other sensitive points.

“I am really happy with state government's decision to depute women commandos to curb crimes against women. Eve teasing not only hurts a girl's dignity but also curbs her freedom to live. During the interaction with women commandos, we felt that there is somebody to listen to us,” said a girl student of government elementary school in Mataur village.

Pushpa Salaria, chairperson, Human Rights Protection Forum, says, “With this initiative, girls will be at ease to approach women commandos to report eve teasing and other crimes against them. It is good move that they are interacting with the girl students. There are many examples of eve-teasing taking ugly turns, leaving the victims so disturbed that they have committed suicides. The law has to be stringent to curb eve-teasing.”
