Punjab Women Commission will start an awareness campaign from next month to make women aware of their rights.

Seminars, presentations and women courts will be organised at block, district and state levels. Commission chairperson Paramjit Kaur Landran announced this here on Tuesday while holding a court at her office to redress women dispute cases.

She said the commission would soon hold courts in every district to provide justice to women and in this process border and backward areas would be given priority.

She said that every Tuesday and Thursday, courts were being held at her office to redress complaints of women. She said that from February 19 to June 6, the commission had received 394 complaints of which 59 were settled by making the two parties reach a compromise.

The chairperson said her priority was to settle women's dispute cases by convincing both parties to reach a mutual settlement. She said she recently visited the SSP offices of Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala and Ludhiana police commissioner to personally examine the performance of police in handling women's cases.

She also visited the Ludhiana jail to review the facilities provided to women prisoners. She observed that all cases regarding women should be handled only by women officers.
