With women and girls feeling more vulnerable to crimes like rape and molestation, the municipal corporation has now plans to introduce women-only taxis, called "she taxis" in the state capital on the lines of similar services being run in Kerala. The taxis will cater for those who prefer to see another female at the wheel. While the vast majority of male taxi drivers are of course completely safe, many women simply feel less threatened with a female driver."The pink coloured taxis will be owned and run by women," deputy mayor Tikender Panwar said. The civic body has also received a proposal from Maruti Suzuki to run a call centre for the taxis. The auto major has offered to provide its multiutility vehicles for the new service at concessional prices. "We've received a proposal from the Simla municipal corporation to run women-only taxis," confirmed urban development minister Sudhir Sharma. The civic body also plans to operate golf carts from the medical college to Sanjauli, from Chota Shimla to the Shimla Club and from the central telegraph office to Baioluganj. The city's dilapidated public transport system (if it can be called that) remains woefully inadequate with women and girls having to literally jostle their way into the city's overcrowded buses and private taxis to get a ride, let alone a seat. As such the "she taxi" service is likely to bring some relief for the fairer sex.
