Year and a half

Nearly one-and-a-half years after Sector 38 resident Harpreet Kaur had committed suicide and accused her husband of domestic violence on August 1, 2011, a court here on Friday sentenced her husband, Gurmeet Singh, to four years in prison.

The court had on Tuesday held Gurmeet guilty of abetting the suicide of his wife, who he had married in 1996. The court had acquitted Gurmeet's father, Bhupinder Singh, on the same day.

Police had registered an abetment to suicide case on the day the victim was found dead, following a complaint by her brother, Gurcharan Singh, who had accused Gurmeet and his father of driving his sister to end her life.

The complainant had told the police that his sister Kaur had married Gurmeet in November 1996. But the couple shared a strained relationship and Gurmeet used to assault her. The complainant alleged that Harpreet Kaur hanged herself at her Sector 38 residence because of this.

During the trial, the daughter of the deceased testified against her father in the court, saying that he used to beat up her mother regularly. The girl had later filed an application saying that she wanted to get her statement recorded again. She had said that she gave the statement against her father after being pressured by her maternal uncle. The court had dismissed the application.
