The Punjab government has launched a campaign to spread awareness among farmers about yellow rust, a disease infesting wheat usually early in the growth season, when the temperature ranges from 2°C to 15°C. The department of agriculture, Punjab, has supplied 2.32 lakh litres of propiconazol, a fungicide, at its offices for distribution among farmers.

KS Pannu, secretary, agriculture, Punjab, on Monday flagged off mobile vans carrying agricultural experts to various places in the state with the aim of educating and cautioning farmers about the disease. He stated that the vans would cover each block of the state. Pannu said farmers should approach agricultural experts in case they suspected yellow rust.

Pannu said the government had launched a major project at Kartarpur (Jalandhar) to educate young farmers about diversifying their crop patterns. He stated that the government had started a centre of excellence at a cost of Rs 25 crore to train the youth in floriculture and growing vegetables. The government would also provide subsidy to farmers willing to switch over to growing cash crops, including vegetables.

Dr Mangal Singh Sandhu, director, agriculture, said the campaign against yellow rust would save farmers from loss.
