High drama prevailed at the Sector-17 Plaza on Monday when a youth hailing from Jalandhar allegedly passed lewd remarks against a girl and tried to get physical with her. The girl had come to take part in a candlelight march in the memory of the Delhi gangrape victim.
The suspect has been identified as Gurjot Singh, who is studying in a college in Jalandhar. He and his friends had come to the city to celebrate New Year.
When he allegedly passed remarks and touched the girl, she slapped him and raised alarm. People rushed to the rescue of the girl. The suspect was beaten up and he called his friends, who came to defend him but were also taken to task by passersby who had gathered in support of the girl.
The drama continued for over 30 minutes. The police were informed and the Neelam post in-charge Sohan Lal rushed to the spot and managed to nab Gurjot and one of his friends, while others managed to escape.
According to the police, the girl broke down after they reached the spot. Sub-inspector Sohan Lal said medical examination of both suspects was done and they have been booked on charges of eve-teasing.
A case has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.
