Police arrested a youth hailing from Ludhiana today on charge of cheating by offering to sell a fake gold brick. The accused was identified as 27-year-old Varinder Singh.
"I received a phone call from one of my friends who informed me that he is getting a gold brick at throwaway price and thus wanted me to accompany him to Mataur where the brick was to be delivered," SAS Nagar jewellers association president Sarabjeet Singh told HT.
He said that when he saw the brick he could make out that it was not genuine and therefore persuaded Varinder Singh, who had arrived there to deliver the brick, to come along with them in their car to collect the money. They instead drove the accused straight to the police station, where he was arrested.
Sarabjeet said that a gang was on the prowl in the town and operated through mobile phones. "The gang members call up people and claim to be calling up from Rajasthan. They tell people that they have found a gold brick while digging and are looking for people to buy the same. They offer the brick for Rs 2-5 lakh," revealed Sarabjeet.
"We have arrested one person for selling a brick by claiming it to be genuine gold. A golden brick weighing 735 grams was seized from him," said DSP (city) RS Sohal.
