After keeping them in preventive custody for more than eight hours, the Chandigarh police released Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) president Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, PYC general secretary Sukhwinder Singh Danny and four others, who were arrested on Wednesday afternoon while marching towards chief minister Parkash Singh Badal's residence to stage a protest demonstration.

The UT police had registered a DDR (daily diary report) against the PYC leaders for violating Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which bars the assembly of more than five persons for holding a protest demonstration.

Though the PYC leaders did not opt for bail, the police released them at midnight on Wednesday at Mullanpur village, near here.

The PYC had held a protest demonstration against the SAD-BJP government for allegedly shielding murderers of Sukhraj Singh, who was the Congress candidate in the recent block samiti elections from Patti (Tarn Taran).
