A former state-level cricketer, Sahil Thakur, 26, who worked as a 'bouncer' (security staff) at local discotheques, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his rented room in Sector 22 here on Tuesday morning. Sources in the police said traces of the contraband 'smack' were found near the body and he could have died of drug overdose, though the exact reason would be ascertained only after the viscera report.

A woman used to stay with him in the room which he had rented around seven years ago, said neighbours. Sources said the girl had left for a wedding on Sunday and had not returned since. His parents, however, did not suspect any foul play and were handed over the body after post-mortem examination. Viscara samples were taken by experts from the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory who would file a report.

A native of Hoshiarpur in Punjab, Thakur represented Himachal Pradesh in junior cricket and used to practice at the Sector-16 stadium till about four years ago. After that, he started working as a bouncer at the city's lounges and discotheques.

The death came to light after Thakur did not answer phone calls since Sunday night and did not open the door of his room despite repeated knocks. He was last seen on Sunday evening by his friends when he had gone to the Sector-22 market. On Monday, his phone remained switched off.

On Tuesday, his friend Vicky said, "I got a call from Sahil's woman friend that he was not traceable. She asked me to go and check." Vicky and some neighbours then broke open the door and found Sahil's body on the bed. His body was stiff and had turned blue. Police were informed around 9am.

Further proceedings would depend on the viscera report, which could take about a month.
