A policeman was critically injured after he was allegedly stabbed by a youth while on duty in Pampore town in Pulwama district on Monday morning. The cop collapsed at the scene and was taken to a subdistrict hospital in Pampore in an unconscious state.
Confirming the incident, police said the youth was arrested.
"An assailant stabbed a police official in the Pampore market. He was chased and overpowered by some policemen present nearby. The injured police official was admitted to a hospital from where doctors referred him to the Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Soura," a police spokesman said.
The police said the motive behind the attack was yet to be known. However reports suggest the youth is mentally unstable.
Police sources have identified the victim as Bupinder Singh, who was on duty near a bridge in the town when he was stabbed by Ishfaq Ahmad Khan, a resident of Tral, around 20 km from the Pampore area.
Later, members of a special joint operation group comprising the police and the Central Reserve Police Force nabbed Khan in a nearby market.
