‘A civil servant must meet all expectations’

They were among the 998 candidates recommended for appointment to the IAS, IPS, IFS and other Central services last year. Vinit Nandanwar and Ajay Jha are upbeat about the careers they have chosen. “I’m glad that I will get to serve people. I worked really hard to join the IAS,” says Nandanwar, who is training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie.


Talking about his preparations for the Civil Services Main exam, he says that a candidate must have the ability to analyse and think rationally. “A civil servant needs to be logical, must have decision-making ability and should be good at policy making, planning and coordination. He/she should be good not just at making policies but also implementing them,” says Nandanwar, who cracked the exam in his fourth attempt.

The most important job of a civil servant, according to him, is to act as a link between the people and the government and meet expectations of everyone. Nandanwar, who hails from Bastar in Chhattisgarh, is prepared to work in Naxal-affected areas in his home state. After this three-month training at the academy, all officers will be going on a two-month Bharat Darshan as part of the second stage of training.

This would be followed by a seven-month field training stint where they will work under senior officers before finally returning to the academy for another two months of training. There will be foreign tours too to enable the officers to learn about administrative training in various countries.

For Jha, who is training at the National Academy of Audit and Accounts in Shimla, joining the civil services was his ultimate ambition. “I worked with the National Thermal Power Corporation for four years before I took the Civil Services exam. I always wanted to get involved in administrative work and work at the grassroots level,” he says. He is associated with the Indian Audit and Accounts Department under the Comptroller and Auditor General.

“We are involved in the auditing and accounting process for several schemes such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employee Guarantee Act and National Rural Health Mission. Some of our recommendations such as changing the time for opening of the Tatkal booking window of Indian Railways have been implemented,” adds Jha.
