Delhi is a hot and happening city- quite literally. With the temperature touching 47 degrees already, the heat is excruciatingly difficult to deal with. Sunburns and tans are common occurences, and iced tea is everyone’s new best friend. “I hardly leave the house. My air conditioner and my laptop are my sole companions now,” says Astha Kapila, who is studying at Sushant School of Architecture, Gurgaon.
While some of us prefer to stay indoors during most part of the day, others have to leave the comfort of their homes every now and then. “All my friends who are studying in different cities have come back for their vacations. Even the ones who live here are now free after their exams. We have to make plans, and all of them can’t happen at night. So I cannot avoid going out during the day,” says Anjini Khanna, a student of Maitreyi College, Chanakyapuri. So how do we beat the heat? Here are some cool summer tips to deal with the unbearable Delhi summers:
Get a haircut: Short hair is trending this season. Get a nice chic bob cut or shoulder cut with bangs! Not only will you look fashionable, you will also save yourself the trouble of managing long hair. And for the boys, a mohawk or a partially shaved head looks stylish. Since colleges are closed for summer vacations, you don’t have to worry about your teachers nagging you!
Go swimming: Everyone would agree that there is nothing more inviting than a pool full of water in this heat. Going for a swim not only offers a relief from the heat, but it is also very relaxing. “As soon as the summer hit, I enrolled myself in the swimming facility near my place. I make it a point to go swimming for at least an hour every day,” says Pranav Agarwal from Maharaja Agrasen College, Vasundra Enclave.
Go shopping: One reason why every girl loves the summer despite the heat: shopping. Take out those shorts and tank tops you stored in the deepest reaches of your wardrobe during winter. Also, go update your wardrobe.
“I go on a shopping spree every month. The malls are safe havens — you can always find something there, and air-conditioning will keep you cool,” says Simran Singh, from Amity University. Crop tops and skirts are every girl’s favourite this summer. For the boys, there are a variety of boxer shorts and T-shirts available in cool and funky prints.
Go on a vacation: Answer the call of the hills this summer. Places like Mukteshwara (Uttarakhand), Manikaran (Himachal Pradesh) and Yercaud (Tamil Nadu) are buzzing with tourists this time of the year. Although they will only offer a few days of respite, the fun and frolic you will engage in during those days will definitely ensure that the trip is worthwhile.
“Everyone in our group of friends from college had been planning to go on a trip ever since the summers arrived. When our exams ended, we put our plans into action and went to a hill station for three days. It was one of the best vacations ever,” says Utkarsh Singh from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
Eat wise: Food plays a very important part in maintaining your body temperature. Avoid eating spicy food, as it raises your body temperature. Have smaller meals, but more frequently. Eat more water-based fruits and vegetables, and avoid eating dry fruits. Replace your hot tea or coffee with iced tea, cold coffee, coconut water, fresh juices and the age-old favourites, Rasna and Tang.
“Drinking lots of fluids is a necessity, as it is very important to keep yourself hydrated. Hats, scarves and umbrellas can be used to avoid getting sunburnt. Wear clothes that are light-coloured and aren’t body-hugging. Also, sunscreen, with a minimum SPF 25, should be applied every time you step out of the house, and re-applied after every six to eight hours,” says Dr Rajiv Erry, senior consultant and unit head, internal medicine, Fortis Memorial Research Institute
