Delhi gang-rape case file sent to HC

A special court that sentenced to death four convicts in the December 16 gang-rape and murder case has sent the file to the Delhi High Court for confirmation of capital punishment.

It is mandatory for the trial court to refer a death penalty case to a high court for confirmation of the sentence within 30 days of the pronouncment of the verdict.

Case records related to the conviction and death sentence of Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh has been referred to the high court, sources said.

“The convicts be hanged by neck till they are dead. At a time when gruesome crimes against women have become rampant, courts cannot turn a blind eye to the need to send a strong deterrent message to perpetrators of such crimes. The crime has shaken the collective conscience of the society,” additional sessions judge Yogesh Khanna had said while sentencing the four convicts.

He had held the four guilty on 13 counts, including murder and gang-rape of the 23-year-old paramedical student.

Ram Singh, 34, who was one of the prime accused, was found dead in his cell at Tihar jail in March and proceedings against were abated.

The sixth accused, a juvenile, who was the most brutal among them, was on August 31 convicted and sentenced to a maximum of three years in a reformation home.

Meanwhile, two of the convicts were allowed to pursue their studies in Tihar jail.
