Power supply to Sangrur school disconnected due to non-payment of bill

The Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) has disconnected power supply to Government High School in Benra village of Dhuri sub-decision of the district for non-payment of the bill by the village panchayat.

The 210 students of the school have been suffering a lot due to the negligence of the village panchayat which has not paid the electricity bill for the last couple of years. The bill now amounts to Rs 3 lakh.

School principal Budh Ram said he had repeatedly given reminders to the panchayat, district education department, punchayat department and the district administration but to no avail.

Aam Aadmi Party MP Bhagwant Mann said that the Punjab government should look into the matter urgently. "If our deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal can give a crore to elite Sanawar school, he can also pay just Rs 3 lakh to pay electricity bill of a school to protect the children from heat."

Benra village panchayat secretary Karamjeet said, "The previous village panchyat had deposited only `25,000 against the bill, but the new Sarpanch Amarjeet Singh, who has been facing some probes, does not have the authority to spend panchayat money, has not deposited even a single penny for the electricity bill of the school."

When contacted, Dhuri SDM Isha Singal said, "I could not contact the officials concerned today, but I talked to the BDO to look into the matter."  However, after repeated attempts, Sangrur DDPO could not be contacted for comment.
