Ahead of the assembly elections, a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader, Harvinder Kalyan, has quit the party. Kalyan, a former youth Congress leader, had joined Haryana Janhit Congress before joining the BSP in 2009. He had unsuccessfully contested the 2009 assembly polls from Ghraunda seat.

Once a known supporter of the late Bhajan Lal faction of the Congress, Kalyan said he was in consultation with his supporters to decide his future political course. A qualified civil engineer, Kalyan remained active in the Congress for nearly 18 years.
