Illegal mining on panchayat land, complaint made to DC

Five people, including two panches of Bangiwal village, have reported sand-mafia activity on the panchayat land in connivance with police and mining officials.

Panches Kulwant Kaur and Balwant Singh, along with villagers Prem Singh, Darshan Singh and Harbans Singh, have lodged a complaint with deputy commissioner Varun Roojam and said illegal mining is on at the site.

They have accused sarpanch Kashmir Kaur, and villagers Sulakhan Singh and Chhinderpal Singh of mining sand illegally without fear for the past many years, saying the even have JCB machines to dig earth and tractor-trailers to transport the mineral.

Report sought from SSP

The deputy commissioner sought a report from Jalandhar (rural) superintendent of police (SSP) Yurinder Singh Hayer on the complaint.

The SSP had sought a report from deputy superintendent of police HPS Parmar, who had further asked Mehatpur station house officer Manjit Singh to look into the allegation of illegal mining.

On Thursday (October 24), the Mehatpur police registered a case of illegal sand mining against villager Baldev Singh of Bangiwal, which concurs with the villagers' charges of unauthorised activity on the site. SHO Manjit Singh said block mining officer Pawan Kumar had reported to the police that the accused had excavated sand illegally from his land. The accused sarpanch was unavailable for comments.
