Saying that state Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa was far ahead of predecessor Capt Amarinder Singh in spreading lies, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday said he had no time to indulge in a war of words with a 'gappi' (liar) as development is the sole agenda of the SAD-BJP government.
Addressing the party workers after inaugurating projects worth Rs 85 crore in this district, Sukhbir said, "Earlier, there was the Maharaja of Patiala who framed the Badal family in false cases as he had no issues except political vendetta. Voters taught him a lesson that he would not forget. Now, Bajwa has crossed Amarinder and is spreading lies about our government as he also does not have any issues to raise. He would also get the same boot which Amarinder got from the public for spreading lies. Don't believe in what Bajwa says. Tell the public that the SAD-BJP government is financially sound and the development of Punjab is our sole agenda."
He said it was the UPA government at the Centre that was under severe economic and political crisis, not Punjab. "Rupee has touched a new low, the Centre has no grants to give to states, inflation is at an all-time high, while there is political confusion in the country. The country is in deep economic and political crisis, thus there is need to throw out this ill-performing government," he said.
He said Bajwa was misleading people by dishing out wrong and misleading information. Advising the state Congress chief to desist from spreading false propaganda on the financial front, he said Bajwa should instead mount pressure on the Centre to release Punjab's share in central sales tax of Rs 700 crore immediately.
Later, talking to reporters, the deputy CM alleged that the state Congress was working under a conspiracy to tarnish the image of Punjab by falsifying facts. "I don't want to indulge in destructive politics as my only agenda is development," said Sukhbir refusing to comment on Bajwa's charges against him. Sukhbir also did not respond to questions about Sidhu, saying it was the internal matter of the BJP. He said the SAD would support the BJP in parliamentary and assembly polls.
Sukhbir said the SAD-BJP government was set to dedicate three units of thermal plants which were under construction to the state. The first unit of Talwandi Sabo will be inaugurated on November 24, the Rajpura plant on December 8 and the third plant on December 20. Punjab would be power surplus by the end of this year, he reiterated.
He said the state government would disburse the dearness allowance in December.
He also announced to release all pending tubewell connections to farmers having less than five acres in a month.
