The Punjab health department has started an initiative to honour top performing government doctors every fortnight.

"There are a large number of government doctors who are doing tremendous work in challenging circumstances. The initiative was taken to encourage them," said Dr Ashok Nayyar, director, health services, Punjab.

The recognition to top doctors will motivate their peers to excel, he added.

The department has divided the awards into three categories: best out-patient department (OPD) services (physicians), institutional delivery services (gynaecologists) and surgeons. Every fortnight, top-10 doctors are chosen from each category. The list is uploaded on the official website (pbhealth.gov.in) of the health department and the doctors are given commendation certificates.

The top doctors are shortlisted on the basis of the OPD monitoring system, evaluating the number of surgeries, deliveries and patients examined. The feedback provided by civil surgeons is also considered for finalising top performers.
