Border Security Force (BSF) jawans and sleuths of the Counter Intelligence wing of the state police, in a joint operation, have seized 21-kg heroin — packed a kg each in 21 bags — near the Border Out Post of Gajjal under the Ferozepur sector on Saturday after midnight.
“We had received a tip-off and a special ambush was planned. In addition to the contraband, a pistol and several rounds of ammunition has also been recovered. Sleuths of the 191 Batallion of the BSF carried out the operation,” said Ferozepur deputy inspector general RK Thapa.
He added that as the ambush party was on patrol, some smugglers hidden in the fields of Gajjal BOP threw a plastic pipe across the border.
When challenged, the smugglers did not stop and opened fire forcing the BSF troops to retaliate, the DIG added, claiming that the smugglers managed to escape using the cover of darkness.
Later, during a search of the area, the 21 packets of heroin, a pistol, a pistol magazine and five rounds of ammunition were recovered from the plastic pipe. Four empty cases of 12 bore were also recovered.
