Invoking 'Ram Rajya' and 'Aurangzeb', the Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday attacked both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state and the rival camp in his party. Akhilesh also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying, "Now only one year of his term is left. Where is clean Ganga, where is the Varanasi metro, and where is the bullet train?"

Four months after brutal defeat at the hands of BJP, the former chief minister seems to have finished licking his wounds and put on battle fatigues to take on the ruling party, its governments at the Centre and the state level, and the rival camp within his own party.

"Those behind calling me Aurangzeb, be warned— I am reading about Aurangzeb these days. Beware of me," he said, in an apparent warning to his uncle and SP MLA Shivpal Yadav.

Last October, in the middle of the bitter Yadav family feud, the rival SP camp was apparently behind calling Akhilesh Yadav 'Aurangzeb', by drawing parallels between the way Mughal emperor treated his father Shah Jahan and Akhilesh had treated his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Akhilesh was addressing a press conference in Lucknow on Thursday, a day after he held a sizable public meeting in Faizabad from where he launched the ‘Desh bachao, Desh banao’ campaign statewide. The temple town of Ayodhya is in Faizabad. At the press conference, Akhilesh said: “What kind of Ram Rajya is there? Two days ago a daughter was killed on the road in Ballia by stalkers. Leave aside any let up in crime cases, crimes—that too heinous crimes—have skyrocketed in the state. The BJP had charged Samajwadi Party of running the thanas (police stations) in our government. I want to know who is running the thanas now?”

“The government says that UP100 (the emergency police response system introduced by the SP government) has dishonest and corrupt practices going on. So under whose government is all this going on? We built India’s best UP100, but the government of the party that talks about Digital India has ruined the system that won accolades internationally. Now, police are being used to extort money all over the state,” he said.

Akhilesh said that if the BJP government claims that it got 5,000 acre land freed from land mafia, then they must expose the land mafia. Hinting at some of the MLCs of his party who recently resigned from the legislative council and joined the BJP, Akhilesh said: “The land mafia who should go behind bars, have gone to BJP instead.”

Akhilesh accused the BJP of using police machinery to intimidate and implicate Zilla Panchayat members. “They have been implicating our boys with section 302 (murder) and 376 (rape). We also have recordings of how the police was being used to frame charges. We will release those recordings. They are doing all this to have Zilla Panchayat chairpersons from BJP,” he said.
