Railway police in Assam arrested a youth for allegedly raping a girl onboard a moving train on Thursday night and are on the lookout for his two accomplices.
The victim, who works as a domestic help in Bengaluru and hails from Pilobari in Tinsukia district, was going home by the Bangalore-Tinsukia Express when the incident took place, police said.
“After most passengers in her compartment alighted at Dibrugarh, the girl shifted to another compartment where the three youths allegedly took her to a toilet and raped her,” said Nitul Gogoi, SP, government railway police (GRP).
The 20-year-old victim got down at the New Tinsukia station early on Friday and informed her brother of the crime.
The matter was then reported to government railway police at the station who swung into action and arrested Prahlad Chettri, a 23-year-old who works as a cook in an eatery in Bengaluru.
“Chettri, who is from Bordumsa in Tinsukia, confessed his involvement in the crime. But he has denied any involvement of the other two accused, whom he met on the train,” Gogoi told Hindustan Times.
A case of rape has been registered based on the victim’s statement and investigation is underway to nab the other accused. Reports from a medical examination of the girl are yet to come in.
