The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an Income Tax Officer (ITO), for demanding Rs3 lakh, and a tax inspector, for taking Rs5,000, on September 27. The arrested accused have been identified as ITO Abhishek Kumar Meena and tax inspector Manohar Shetty. Both the accused were in police custody until September 29, following which they were remanded in judicial custody.
Meena was accused by the complainant of demanding Rs3 lakh for himself and Rs5,000 for his staff for passing a favourable Assessment Order and not imposing penalty during scrutiny of income tax returns (ITR) of the complainant for the AY 2014-15, said CBI spokesperson RK Gaur, Mumbai. A case was registered against Meena and Shetty under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1998, by the CBI.
“Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught both the officers red-handed” said Gaur, adding, “Searches were conducted at the official and residential premises of both the officers, which led to recovery of incriminating documents.”
