GDA plans underpass at Mohan Nagar intersection in Ghaziabad
The intersection is a bottleneck and often faces heavy traffic congestionnoida Updated: May 29, 2017 22:57 IST
In order to ease traffic congestion and free up the Mohan Nagar intersection, officials of Ghaziabad development authority (GDA) have planned a major underpass there.
The intersection is a major bottleneck for daily commuters as it gets traffic going towards Sahibabad, Vasundhara and Ghaziabad city.
The officials said the underpass is in the planning stage and will help ease traffic movement towards Hindon airbase and also on GT Road towards Ghaziabad city. They estimated the cost of the project at nearly Rs 100 crore.
“The underpass will decongest the Mohan Nagar intersection in a major way as the 9.41km metro route to Ghaziabad has a proposed station nearby. This will considerably increase vehicular movement. The underpass will be for traffic coming from Vasundhara. It will allow a seamless passage towards Ghaziabad city and also towards the Hindon airbase,” said Sushil Dwivedi, chief engineer, GDA.
“The length of the two-way underpass is estimated to be around 300-400 metres and the traffic will move below the intersection. We are consulting the Metro officials as the project is planned below the metro route,” he said.
The intersection is proposed to have a major station on the metro link from Delhi’s Dilshad Garden to New bus-stand in Ghaziabad. The entire metro section is elevated and will have eight stations in Ghaziabad, including the one at Mohan Nagar.
To ease the traffic flow at Mohan Nagar, the authority is also undertaking two major rail underbridges — at Sahibabad railway station and Vasundhara near Hindon canal.
The work on the underpass at Sahibabad railway station is nearing completion, while the one near Vasundhara will be ready only in another two to three months. Both projects will take vehicles away from Mohan Nagar.
In future, the Mohan Nagar intersection is proposed to become a major interchange station for Metro commuters. The authority has also proposed a Metro extension from Sector 62 Noida to Indirapuram and will further extend it towards Mohan Nagar.
There are also plans to extend the currently operational Anand Vihar to Vaishali metro route towards Vasundhara and further to Mohan Nagar.
