A 28-year-old man was arrested for repeatedly hitting a woman with a hammer at Dhobi Ghat last week.
The police said the two used to be in a relationship, but after a fallout, the woman married the man’s brother in 2014.
According to the police, the Nimesh (name changed) told them that despite being married, the woman would often blackmail him and threaten to get him arrested for rape if he didn’t give her money. The police said the woman had separated from Nimesh’s brother, but continued talking to Nimesh.
An officer from Agripada police station said, “They met late at night near Dhobi Ghat, and the victim allegedly started asking for money again. This led to a fight, and Nimesh brought a hammer from a nearby construction site and hit her five times.”
The officer said Nimesh hit the woman so badly, she would have died if residents didn’t stop him and rush her to a hospital. “The locals took her to Nair hospital, but Nimesh fled . The woman could not even talk when she was brought to the hospital, but with the help of the residents’ description, we identified the accused,” said an officer.
Nimesh told the police that the woman and his brother got married “just to take revenge” as the brothers had fought over property, the officer said.
The police have booked Nimesh under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court and has been remanded in judicial custody.
