A day after Sikh radical organisations sought permission to honour Canadian defence minister Harjit Singh Sajjan, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Tuesday said it would not allow any other organisation to welcome the visiting dignitary on the Golden Temple premises.
Sajjan will visit the Golden Temple on Thursday morning and the SGPC has planned a brief function in his honour him in the “parikrama”.
Dal Khalsa, a radical organisation, had sought permission from the SGPC to honour Sajjan at the Golden Temple. “Only SGPC will honour the Canadian minister at the shrine. Other organisations (Dal Khalsa and Damdami Taksal) can welcome him at any other place in the city as per their wish,” SGPC chief secretary Harcharan Singh told HT as a SGPC team was busy making preparations for the Canadian minister’s visit.
The committee that controls management of the Golden Temple, along with other historical gurdwaras in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, would set up a low-rise dais in the “parikarma” for the function. “SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar will present a siropa (robe of honour), set of religious books, coffee table book and a model of the Golden Temple to Sajjan,” said the SGPC chief secretary.
